Teen daughter of Ky. meteorologist T.G. Shuck lands recurring role on CBS thriller ‘Evil’

For 14-year-old actress Brooklyn Shuck, life on the set of the CBS series “Evil” sometimes imitates life at home … minus the demonic forces. Though she plays the oldest of the main character’s four daughters on “Evil,” in real life Brooklyn is the middle child in a family of three girls with Kentucky roots. Her parents are Angie Coleman Shuck, who is from Pikeville, and former WKYT meteorologist T.G. Shuck, a Lexington native who has been at WHAS in Louisville since 2016.…

He shipped off on a seven-day sail across the North Atlantic to serve as a military police officer in the second World War. At 94, the Louisville native still hasn’t stopped trying to get across the ocean. He’s spent the past few years revisiting his old battlefields in Europe: Normandy, Market Garden, Bastogne. …

Not who we are

Anyone with a pulse should be outraged after reading the story about the horses. In our newspapers, we report on all things that happen in Pike and surrounding counties. Regional news is important. It’s often heartbreaking, sad, and sometimes good. But we rarely expect to report on the despicable events from this past week. When we found out that pods of horses were shot dead on an abandoned strip mine in Floyd County, we were heartbroken and out raged. Just as we are when we report another drug death, child abuse and other heinous crimes. But without bias or prejudice we did our job and reported what we know. …

As Ashland’s historic AK Steel plant shuts down, all eyes turn to Braidy Industries

The hulking AK Steel mill that sprawls beside the Ohio River and put generations of breadwinners to work is shutting down, leaving people in this Eastern Kentucky community to wonder what, if anything, might fill the void it leaves behind. Cleveland-Cliffs, a company poised to acquire AK Steel next year, has floated the possibility of firing up the Ashland mill’s blast furnace again. Another source of hope is Braidy Industries, which plans to build a $1.7 billion aluminum rolling mill nearby that’s expected to eventually employ around 600 full-time workers.…
